在高普職業生涯中，無論執教哪一家球會，都能與揮下球員建立密切的關係，這亦是他領隊生涯中的成功之處。他在利物浦初上任時已表示自己管理球員的哲學：「我可以成為球員的朋友，只是未必最佳朋友！」，不少球員亦曾提到高普的親和力是他最與眾不同的地方。
